Dot NAME Domains

Set up in 2001, the .NAME generic extension is the only one supposed to be for personal web pages only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are famous by. Initially, only 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you desired to acquire john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already taken third-level domains remained online.
